Every time you browse to a web site, the browser has to resolve
the address you typed in with the actual IP address of the site.
It does this by a Domain Name System (DNS) lookup. Your ISP has
a DNS server which is used by default. Quite often, the ISP's
server is very busy, and so there is a perceptible delay before
the web site appears.
You can shorten or eliminate this delay by specifying an explicit
DNS address. A good one to use is OpenDNS which runs a bank of
high-speed servers in the USA. I have never experienced any delay
at all when using their servers.
To change your lookups from your ISP to OpenDNS, right click
on the network icon for your connection, and choose Properties.
You will see a window like this:
Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then press the
Properties button.
At the bottom of this window, select Use the following
DNS server addresses. For the Preferred DNS server,
enter this address:
208.67.222.222
For the Alternative DNS server, enter this address:
208.67.220.220
Click OK, and then click Close and Close again. Restart your
PC in order for the settings to take effect.
