If you replace your hard drive with a new one, and want to
give away or sell your old drive, then you should securely erase
your drive. Why? Because deleting files or formatting the hard
drive can still leave data on the drive.
A
free utility, called Secure Erase, is available from UCSD.
This is a DOS program, not a Windows program. If you don't know
how to get your computer to run in DOS, don't use this program,
instead use the one decsribed below.
You can get it free here. There is a PDF tutorial on that page
as well.
Darik's Boot and Nuke is a self-contained boot floppy
that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. This means
you just copy the files to a floppy, put it in your floppy drive,
and reboot the computer. If you don't have a floppy drive, you
can also use a USB memory stick or a CD-R.
You can get it free here.
