It is possible to have Windows XP and Windows Vista on the
same hard drive, but to avoid complications, it is best to have
each in its own partition. You need to use PartitionMagic or
Acronis Disk Director to re-partition your drive. Or add a second
hard drive, and install Vista to that drive.
Because Microsoft changed the boot manager with Vista, adding
a second operating system is not as easy as before.
If you have a hard drive with XP already installed, you can
add Vista.
If you have a blank hard drive, install XP first, then Vista.
If you have already installed Vista and now want to install
XP, you need to make some adjustments.
All of these scenarios are described in this Microsoft Knowlege
Base article: KB919529.
Also, Australian PC Magazine has an article about this here which is, I think, more informative
than Microsoft's article.
