This is one of the most frustrating things that can happen
to your computer. You turn it on one day, Windows starts to load,
then the screen goes black, and the system reboots. Windows again
starts to load, then the screen goes black, and the system reboots.
There are several causes of this phenomenon, one being the
Blaster worm, another being a corrupted file on the hard drive,
another being a failing drive or disk controller.
If it is a hardware failure, there will be a message displayed,
but since the system reboots, you won't see the message. Whether
the system reboots or not on a failure is a parameter that you
can change. However, it is well hidden, being on the Advanced
tab of the System icon in the Control Panel.
Follow these steps to disable this:
Click the Start button, and then open the Control Panel.
If your Control panel looks like this, double click Performance
and Maintenance.
Then double click the System icon.
If your Control Panel looks like this, double click the System
icon.
The System Properties window will appear. Click the Advanced
tab.
Then click the Settings button.
Then uncheck the option Automatically restart, and click the
OK button.
You have to do this BEFORE the system fails, so go to your
Control Panel NOW and fix this.
If your system is crashing and rebooting now, then it's too
late to make this change. You have several options. Look in the
menu at the left for help in recovering your system.
You can also remove your hard drive, put it in an external
hard disk box, connect it to a different (working) system, and
run a virus scan on the drive. This will indicate if it is a
virus or something else.
If there is no virus, run a checkdisk against it. If checkdisk
does not find anything, then you have had a hardware failure.
Chances are it's the drive and not the controller, so this is
easily remedied by buying and installing a new drive.
