Grrrr... Stuff for which there is no
fix
Alice Watson, Paris, France, asks:
Why does Microsoft
Word (especially) go "out to lunch" - it seems to be
busy doing something else, and so you can't type anything in
the meantime.
Why does a program
hang up and ask if I want to shut it down now, or wait till later?
That little box is really annoying - at that point I'm usually
trying to shut the computer down and rush out somewhere, and
can't easily get rid of it as it just comes back.
Why don't I get
a warning message before memory is full (usually because I'm
trying to consult several documents at the same time and try
to open another one, and that causes the whole system to hang
up)? (Doug says: if you're running Windows 98 or ME, you can
run the Windows Resource Monitor; it will show a coloured graphic
of memory usage, that turns yellow or red as memory gets used
up. It's called RSRCMTR.EXE and is located in the Windows\System
directory; you can put a shortcut in the Startup folder so it
runs automatically at startup. If you are running Windows 2000
or XP, the resource monitor is shown under the Performance tab
when you invoke the Task Manager. Right click on an empty part
of the task bar to invoke Task Manager.)
Why don't anti-spam
programs really seem to work, and why don't the service providers
get after the people sending all this junk?
